Freezing my ass off in Ottawa!

Well, its freezing cold here in Ottawa but thats not stopping me from taking in some awesome events while I wait for spring to show up. Here is what I have seen lately:

1. Chantal Kreviazuk LIVE at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. We were in the fifth row and it was just wicked!!! Her husband, Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace, opened up with a 40 minute set. It was just him on guitar singing some original tunes. I liked it! Very different from the Our Lady Peace stuff. Check you his MySpace to listen to his new music. At the start he recited a which was quite moving and touching. After that Chantal played for almost two straight hours. She came back for 2 encores and was nearly in tears with all the applause and appreciation for her. She was beautiful and lovely and funny and I enjoyed every second.

2. The Soweto Gospel Choir all the way from South Africa live at Dominon Chalmers United Church: What I can say about this? They were nothing short of perfection! Inspiring and humbling with an unreal amount of energy that never waned over the whole evening. If you ever have a chance to see them you will be moved!

HeadSpeak says READ IT !!!

Just finished reading two awesome Newfoundland books.

First, "The Custodian of Paradise" - by Wayne Johnston I think WJ is now my favorite author. I read "The Colony of
Unrequited Dreams" twice. I don't know why. I guess I thought it would be less dull the second time around but it wasn't. I didn't hate the book, but it wasn't the greatest either. Once I heard about the latest work I had to pick it up because it was Sheilagh that made the first novel. The storyline is unbelievebly amazing and I enjoyed every single word of this book. Some complained it was too long, but not me. I savoured every bit right up to the end. Read this, trust me you won't be disappointed.

Sylvanus Now - by Donna Morrissey
Now onto book 2. While this book is not the same calibre as the above, it is still a very good book in its own right. I originally read "Kit's Law" by Morrissey several years and was very impressed. That is what lead me to pick up Sylvanus Now. The story is an endearing, and sweet love story taking place in a tiny isolated outport in the 1950's. The couple in the book are affected by the rise of fish plants and large trawlers, and a little something called "resettlement"! Another good read.
That's it for now. I'm currently reading "The Life of Pi" Yes, I'm the last person on the planet to read it! :-)

Buddhism

Well last night I did something something completely different!
I attended the annual meeting of a Buddhist community here in Ottawa. When I arrived everyone was chanting. It was mesmerizing, in a good way. The meeting was very interesting. There were speeches about Buddhism, as well as "experiences" where people would stand & talk about how chanting had helped them to overcome an adversity in their life! Everyone was SO very welcoming. I can certainly see how chanting, and other buddhist concepts could be helpful in one's daily life. Anyways, VERY interesting stuff. Not sure what to make of it all yet.

Some Famous buddhists:
Alanis Morrissette
Richard Gere
Michael Stipe
Pierce Brosnan
Harrison Ford
Orlando Bloom
Sharon Stone
Uma Thurman
Adam Yauch from the Beastie Boys

Listen to Kathleen Edwards

I can't believe it took me this long to discover her. I'm listening to the album "Failer" but she has a more recent one which I plan to pick up real soon!

This is ONYX

poo eater
Onyx is a good little girl most of time, except for this morning when I caught her in the yard eating poo. Yes, poo. DIRTY dog I said! Get in here! She slinked by me, knowing it was bad. The look of shock that came over my face must have been worthy of America's Funniest Home Videos.

Onyx is a good little girl ... most of the time.

Head is on Da Rock ...

... and its freezing! Being SUMMER, I only brought one pair of jeans so I had to go and buy another while I was here. (Darn) Its good though, all the mainland stink is blowing off me :-) Tonight is my cousin's stagette party on George Street. My first visit to George Street in over three years. Apparently we're staying out 'til daylight. I'm, not so sure of that ;-)

Things are good here in Sin Johns. I really do miss it.

Over and out!
